Maybe you’re planning a trip to Frankfurt and would like some ideas for an evening of entertainment in English or perhaps you are already here and want to take some time out from sightseeing and simply enjoy a movie. Whether you prefer the theatre, an opera, a concert or a film, you can find it Frankfurt.
Watch a movie
There are a number of cinemas in Frankfurt, but just be aware that in Germany films are dubbed into German. However, it is possible to watch a film in English, or other languages for that matter.
The EKINOS Cinema, located right at the Hauptwache shows movies in English every Sunday and Monday evenings. Click here to go to the website, then click on a movie from their current list and look for screenings with the words ORIGINAL VERSION.
The Cine Star Metropolis Cinema is a short walk from the Zeil. At this complex there are no special ‘English’ days. However, watching films in languages besides German is possible. Click here to go to the programme, select your movie of choice and then look for Original Language screenings. Note that at this cinema, the Original Language may be English, but it may also be French, Russian or something else.
Attend a concert (or maybe a musical) in the Alte Oper
This grand building is a reconstruction of Frankfurt’s original opera house. It hosts a range of performances – from international musicians to symphony orchestras to musicals.
Click here to check out the programme. Note that musicals are usually spoken in German, but the songs will be in the original language.
Take in a play at The English Theatre Frankfurt
Frankfurt actually has its own English Theatre, which just happens to be the largest English-language theatre in continental Europe! Not only are all performances in English, the actors and actresses in each production are generally from America or England, only coming to Frankfurt during the latter stages of rehersal.
The English Theatre Frankfurt produces a number of shows each season from a variety of genres. Click here to get all the details.
Or with Schauspiel Frankfurt
This is the theatre company of Frankfurt. They have several venues throughout the city, the major one being shared with Oper Frankfurt at Willy Brandt Platz. Schauspiel Frankfurt productions are usually in German, but on selected days you can see plays with English surtitles.

Spend a night at the opera – Oper Frankfurt
If opera is more your thing then Oper Frankfurt is the place for you. They have a full programme of operas, recitals and concerts.
If you want something shorter, then try the Oper To Go (but get your ticket early!). Aimed at young adults they hold this in one of the foyers in the Opera House. It is a mix of operatic music, giving you the opportunity to sample opera in an informal atmosphere.
For opera-themed daytime activities, look out for the Opera Extra – Introductory Talks about New Productions. Although held in German, there is often a lot of English spoken.
